Counts run midnight to midnight in your local time zone. Working days are Monday to Friday; public holidays are not removed. Every calculation happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

The days left in the year drop by one every midnight, so the calculator above reads today’s date and recalculates on every visit. Bookmark it or share the link instead of copying a number that goes stale overnight.

The examples below use fixed dates to show the math. The calculator always shows today. Take Friday, September 11, 2026: day 254 of 365, with 111 days left before December 31.

Split that same figure differently, and you get 15 full weeks plus six, or 79 working days. I check it against a visual grid on paper, with past days shaded dark gray and the rest light, before starting any New Year’s countdown.

How Many Days Are Left in the Year?

Check one thing before you trust any answer: is it counting today? Sunday, March 15 leaves 291 days when you exclude that day, and 292 when you include it. That single choice explains most disagreements between sites.

Bigger units help when you plan. Tuesday, June 30 sits at 184 days left, which is 26 full weeks and two days, or 4,416 hours. The remaining time reads very differently depending on the unit you pick.

Saturday, August 29 makes a neat test case: 124 days left, week 35, day 241. Written in ISO 8601 ordinal format, that date is 2026-241. I say figures like one hundred eleven out loud to catch typos.

How Many Working Days Are Left in the Year?

Working days run Monday through Friday, and the count skips every Saturday and Sunday. From Thursday, October 1, only 65 of the 91 calendar days remaining are weekdays, because 26 weekend days drop out first.

Public holidays are not subtracted. That sounds like an oversight until you travel: a weekday holiday in Brazil is an ordinary working day in Canada, so you get the raw number and adjust it locally.

To account for your own time off, remove each holiday landing on weekdays. A US team taking Thanksgiving and Christmas off that October figure lands near 63, and a week of December leave pulls it to 58.

How Many Weeks Are Left in the Year?

Divide the remaining days by seven and keep the whole number. September 11 is the cleanest example: 111 days give 15 full weeks with six spare, and that split repeats on that date every year.

Rounding up feels natural, and I understand the urge, but a six-day stub rarely delivers a full week of output. Those spare days always land in late December, when most teams have already wound down.

Counting weekends works better for me. From March 15, you get 41 more Saturdays and 42 more Mondays before the year ends. Forty-two Mondays sounds far more urgent than 291 days ever will.

What Day of the Year Is It Today?

The day number starts at January 1, which is day 1, and runs to 365, or 366 in a leap year. September 11 is day 254 in any common year, since weekdays never affect the ordinal count.

Written in ISO 8601 format, that same date becomes 2026-254. Warehouse and lab systems favour it because one number sorts correctly. Each midnight after today simply adds one to the running tally.

ISO week numbering is a separate system, and mixing the two causes real confusion. Week 1 opens on the Monday before the first Thursday, so December 29, 2025 started 2026. That pushes every ISO day number three ahead of the ordinal one.

So September 11 is ordinal day 254 but ISO day 257. Neither is wrong; they count from different starting points. When a system asks for a “day of year,” it almost always wants the ordinal number, not the ISO one. Our age calculator uses the same ordinal counting underneath.

Plenty of people call this the Julian date. Astronomers mean something else entirely by that term, but on a factory floor or in a warehouse, “Julian date” almost always means this plain day number.

How Do You Calculate How Many Days Are Left?

A calculator answers in a second, yet knowing the manual method keeps you honest. You only need the current date, the total days in the year, and one clean subtraction to get the remaining count.

Take Saturday, August 29, 2026: day 29 of month 8 out of 12. Add the days in each preceding month to 29 and you reach 241, the number of days passed since the beginning of the year.

A common year holds 365 days and a leap year 366; 2026 is common. The difference is 365 minus 241, so the result is 124 remaining days left until the end of the year.

Method One: Subtract the Days in Each Month

Begin with the current month and subtract the day you are on from its length. Wednesday, July 1 works nicely: July holds 31 days, so 31 minus 1 leaves 30. Then add each next month whole.

Continue the chain, and you get 30 plus 31, 30, 31, 30, and 31, which lands on 183 days left. Reach December, and it turns trivial: subtract the day from 31 for your remaining count.

Divide by 7 for the weeks left in the year. Chasing a significant date like Easter or Thanksgiving works the same way. Stop adding months at the target rather than running through to December.

Method Two: Subtract the Current Day Number

This is the shortcut I run in my head. Find the current day number and subtract it from 365. Sunday, March 15 is day 74, so 365 minus 74 gives 291, and it takes about two seconds.

Swap 365 for 366 in leap years, or every answer comes out short. I have watched people keep 365 through all of 2028, and that one error quietly follows them from January to December.

It also explains why sites disagree. One page shows 291 days left in 2026 for March 15, while another shows 292. One counts that day and the other does not, and both describe the same year.

How to Calculate the Remaining Days Using Google Sheets or Excel

In Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, one formula handles it:

=DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),12,31)-TODAY()

The TODAY function grabs the current date, and the rest deducts today from December 31 to calculate the remaining days this year. It refreshes every time the file opens.

For working days, the formulas switch to NETWORKDAYS:

=NETWORKDAYS(TODAY()+1,DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),12,31))

The plus 1 skips today so the result matches the calculator above. Add a holiday range as a third argument to strip out your own local closures.

Put a specific or future date in cell A3, and =DATE(YEAR(A3),12,31)-A3 runs the same countdown from that day. Older Google Docs Spreadsheet guides reach for DATEDIF, and CONCAT can bolt on a label.

For the day number, =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0) measures the difference from Jan 0, the last day of the past year. Set the cell format to Number, or Excel will show you a date instead.

Days Left by Month

Every figure below counts the days after the first of that month, through December 31. Only January and February shift in a leap year, because February 29 falls before March and cancels out afterwards.

October 1Thursday2749191
November 1Sunday3056060
December 1Tuesday3353030
December 31Thursday36500

July 1 sits almost exactly at the midpoint, with 182 days behind and 183 ahead. I check the October row before planning any Q4 content calendar, since 91 days disappear faster than it reads.

Days Left at Key Dates in 2026

The count drops by exactly one each midnight, so if today reads 111, tomorrow reads 110 and yesterday read 112. Rather than list consecutive days, here are the dates people actually count toward at the end of the year.

DateWeekdayDay of yearDays left
Halloween, October 31Saturday30461
US Thanksgiving, November 26Thursday33035
Black Friday, November 27Friday33134
Christmas Eve, December 24Thursday3587
Christmas Day, December 25Friday3596
New Year’s Eve, December 31Thursday3650

Read the right column as the gap from that date to the end of the year. Christmas leaves six days, so anyone planning a year-end push has less runway after the holidays than they usually assume.

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, which lands on the 26th in 2026, making Black Friday the 27th. For any other pair of dates, our date difference calculator handles the arithmetic.

Note the halfway split at July 1. Working days behave differently: October holds 22, November 21, and December 23, which is why November feels shortest to US teams after Thanksgiving week.

What Is a Leap Year?

A leap year has 366 days rather than 365. The extra day is February 29, so February stretches to 29 instead of its usual 28, and every date behind it slides one position later in the count.

The rule is every 4 years, with exceptions that catch people out. A century year qualifies only if it is divisible by 400. That is why 2000 counted as a leap year and 2100 will not.

2026 and 2027 are both common years, and 2028 is the next leap year. On January 1, the days left will read 365 instead of 364. It is the first date I test on any tool.

How Many Days Are Left in 2026?

The calculator at the top gives the exact days left in 2026 for today, counting through to December 31 without including the current day. Add one to the result if you need today in the count, say for a launch countdown.

The figure drops at midnight in your own time zone, so Tokyo ticks over a full workday ahead of New York. For gaps shorter than a day, the hours from now calculator is the better tool.

Programming Routines to Get the Day of the Year

Most programming languages ship routines to calculate the current day number of the year. C# uses DateTime.UtcNow.DayOfYear, Go uses time.Now().YearDay(), and Java calls LocalDate.now().getDayOfYear(). Delphi offers DayOfTheYear(Now), while MATLAB subtracts the datenum of Jan 0 from today.

Databases keep it short: Microsoft Access has DatePart(“y”, Now()), MySQL has DAYOFYEAR(NOW()), and T-SQL uses DATEPART(DAYOFYEAR, SYSDATETIME()). PowerShell reads (Get-Date).DayofYear, Python reads datetime.now().timetuple().tm_yday, and R uses format(Sys.Date(), “%j”). Every one returns 1 on January 1.

The trap sits in PHP and PERL. date(‘z’) and (localtime)[7], the yday field, start at zero, so add one. Ruby Time.now.yday, Unix and Linux date +%j, Visual Basic DateTime.Now.DayOfYear, and LibreOffice Calc =ROUNDDOWN(DAYS(NOW(), DATE(YEAR(NOW()),1,1)))+1 all start at one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are left in the year?

The calculator at the top shows the exact number for today, counting through to December 31. As a fixed reference, September 11 leaves 111 days in any common year.

Does the count include today?

No. The standard convention counts the days after today, so December 30 shows one day left and December 31 shows zero. Add one if you want today included.

How many working days are left in the year?

Working days are Monday to Friday only, with public holidays not subtracted. From October 1, for example, 65 of the 91 remaining days are weekdays.

Why do different websites show different numbers?

Almost always because one counts today and the other does not. Time zones cause the rest: the number drops at your local midnight, so Tokyo changes hours before New York.

What is the Excel formula for days remaining in the year?

Use =DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),12,31)-TODAY() for calendar days, or =NETWORKDAYS(TODAY()+1,DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),12,31)) for working days. Both update automatically each time the file opens.
