How to Add Days, Weeks, Months and Years to a Date

How Common Offsets Convert

Counting in days and counting in months rarely agree. This table shows where the usual offsets actually land, and every row holds true no matter which date you start from.

Notice that 30 days is never a month and 90 days is only sometimes three months. The gap depends entirely on which months the span crosses, which is the whole reason a date calculator exists.

Any multiple of seven keeps the same weekday, and a full year moves it forward by exactly one. Those two rules cover most of the mental shortcuts people try, and both are worth memorising.

Subtracting Time From a Date

Going backward feels unnatural, which is why people get it wrong. To subtract days from a date, you work from a fixed event date and reverse into the past, counting the same units you would count forward.

Every result should carry three markers: day of week, day number within the year, and week number. Logistics teams sort on the ordinal date, while scheduling teams live entirely inside the week number.

Some dates float. A floating Monday or floating Thursday holiday shifts yearly, so a fixed offset lands on Tuesday one year and Wednesday the next. Check the weekday before promising anything to anyone.

Where People Use Date Math

Paperwork is relentless about it. A visa stay, a warranty period, a rental agreement, an invoice payment term, a subscription renewal, or a returns window all reduce to counting forward from one fixed date.

Cancellation clauses are the sharpest example. Miss a 30-day notice window by a single day and the terms change, which is why nobody sensible runs that count from memory or a wall calendar.

Date Formats and Time Zones

Format confusion ruins good arithmetic. DD/MM/YYYY and MM/DD/YYYY disagree on twelve dates every month, so 03/04 reads as two different days depending on which side of the Atlantic wrote it.

ISO 8601 settles it. The date format runs year first, and an ordinal date reduces the whole thing to one sortable day number. Any system handling a timestamp should already speak it.
